Young cricketers keen to emulate their heroes in this year’s Cricket World Cup are to get new facilities at All Hallows High School following an appeal to Salford Council by Hazel Blears MP.

The Salford and Eccles MP met with pupils, the School’s PE teacher Chris Tye and a representative from Lancashire County Cricket Club on Friday, to discuss plans for a new outdoor pitch.

Funding has been secured by Salford Council to redevelop Buile Hill tennis courts and provide pupils with the opportunity to start playing a sport that many had nearly given up on because of a lack of access to appropriate facilities.

“There are many talented cricketers at All Hallows School but they had no kit and the nearest facilities were seven miles away,” explained Hazel. “We’ve managed to secure brand new kit from Lancashire County Cricket Club and now we’ve got somewhere for them to play. It’s so important that local talent has the chance to shine. Who knows, we could find the next Andrew Strauss or Andrew Flintoff in Salford.”

Commenting after her visit, the headteacher, Mrs Monica Owens, said:

“Hazel Blears has shown great commitment to supporting us in our ambitious sporting ventures by investigating locations for cricket and assisting in funding to equip our students. Without this support many of our students would not have the rich and diverse experience of sport that we try to provide at our school.”
