MediaCity and the BBC
Posted: 7 October 2010

As one of the biggest supporters of the decision to locate MediaCity in Salford, I am delighted to hear so many BBC programmes are now making the move. BBC Breakfast is the latest to confirm it will be joining BBC sport, children’s, learning, future media and technology departments and parts of Radio 5 Live in the move to Salford – despite all the recent negative media coverage from predominately London based press! I was especially encouraged by a remark by the BBC’s Director of Future Media and Technology that Salford would become the BBC’s centre for the internet age. I will be doing all I can to make sure local businesses benefit from this.
The director of BBC North has said he wants the move to Salford to “open up the BBC to people who previously had neither the opportunity nor likelihood of working here”. Casting their talent net into new territory is the best way of ensuring the Beeb is more in touch with real Britain, and I have recently held discussions with bosses at the BBC about making sure local people will be able to take advantage of these opportunities.
