“First of all I want to send our thoughts and condolences to Anuj’s family and friends at this distressing time for them. Nothing will reduce their grief but we need to do all we can to help and support them at this difficult time.
“It is important to pay tribute to Anuj, a young man with a great future ahead of him.
“It is also important that we show solidarity with the local community. The residents I met on the days after Boxing Day have all been upset and angered by this senseless and unprovoked murder.
“As Salfordians we all know how our City has improved over the last decade. Crime has fallen and we have seen significant investment which has helped create more and better jobs. It is because of the transformation that we have seen around us that this horrific crime has been met with anger and a determination by local people to see the perpetrators brought to justice.
“I am pleased that the police have acted swiftly and with that local support, have now been able to charge someone with this crime. Those responsible will face the full force of the law and deserve the strongest possible punishment.
“Finally I want to thank all the people of our great City who have expressed their sympathy with Anuj’s friends and family and who I know will never allow the mindless minority to intimidate those who want to get on with their lives in peace.”
