Hazel Blears has welcomed a commitment by Morrisons supermarket to employ as many local people as possible when it opens its doors in Ordsall later this year.

The Salford and Eccles MP recently arranged a meeting with representatives from Morrisons and the local community to discuss potential employment opportunities for local people at the store.

With representatives from Job Centre Plus, Work Solutions and Salford Lads Club among those in attendance, Ms Blears said she was delighted to see Morrisons offering to be involved in training workshops and pre-application employment training sessions to encourage people with long spells of unemployment to apply for jobs.

“Morrisons have a good record of training local people and offering fantastic apprenticeships,” she said. “I’m really encouraged that local people will have the opportunity to get a career as a butcher, baker, greengrocer or fishmonger, and am delighted that Morrisons have shown such a strong commitment to our community.”

The fourth largest chain of supermarkets in the UK is set to create 190 jobs at the £50million retail development in Ordsall and training sessions to get people ready for the job application process will be announced shortly.

Councillor Ray Mashiter added that these would be taking place at the Salford Lads Club and Community Café, and urged as many local people as possible to sign up.

“Morrisons is a great example of a northern business that has invested in local people throughout the recession,” he said. “They offer staff in-house training and nationally recognized qualifications, and they are making a real difference to local communities.”

Norman Pickavance, Morrisons Group HR Director, said: “Morrisons is delighted to be able to offer nearly 200 jobs in Ordsall. For many people this will be the first step in their career with Morrisons and we are looking forward to building up an enthusiastic team that can provide great fresh food, value and service to the people of Ordsall.”
