Making our homes safer

Many people have mentioned to me that they want to feel secure in their own homes, especially in the summer when open doors and windows can be a simple way into your home. I have been talking to the Salford Police and the Home Office and now there is some very practical help available.

For example, no matter where you live, your local Safer Neighbourhood Police Team can give you a very loud widow alarm which activates if anyone tries to force open the window. You can contact your neighbourhood policing team at Pendleton Police Station on 0161 856 5446/5084 and ask for a free alarm. Free timer switches for lights are also available from the housing team at the Council on 0161 604 7720. These go on at specific times to give the impression that someone is in your home, even though you may not be.

One of the best ways of protecting yourself and your family is to be part of a home watch scheme. If you want to know more about a local scheme near you or are interested in setting up such a scheme, contact Fiona James 0161 856 5421.
